The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has served notice that the election into the office of Governor of Anambra state shall hold on Saturday, 6th February 2010.
The Commission said it had scheduled the governorship election following the Supreme Court decision in the Appeal N0 Sc. 123/2007: Mr Peter Obi V INEC of June 14, 2007 and the powers conferred on it by the Constitution and the Electoral Act 2006.
The Appeal Court ruled that His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi’s tenure as Governor of Anambra state would expire on the 17th of March 2010.
In a statement issued and signed by the Commission’s Secretary, Abdullahi Kaugama, INEC said that all registered Political Parties were entitled to participate and sponsor candidates for the election.
The Commission affirmed its resolve to conduct a credible election and appealed to Political Parties to strictly apply the provisions of all relevant laws governing the election.
INEC drew the attention of the public, particularly the registered Political Parties, Candidates and Associations to Section 221 of the Constitution which prohibited associations other than political parties from canvassing for votes for any candidate or contributing to the funds of any political party or election expenses of any candidate.
The Commission further requested the Parties and Candidates to carry out their campaigns within the times stipulated in the Electoral Act 2006 according to the released timetable and schedule of activities.
